A friendly r-ifle fipatek, between frpm \ members of the • Mounted- Rifl.es resident ..in Motueka and Riwaka came off at the butts at Whal kare wa on Saturday , last. The wfeathei* was good, the wind favorable, and the : shooting fair. The firing, which was at 500 and 500 yards, resulted in:a win for the Motueka section by 18 points. Sergeants. Fowler was in charge of the : victors, and Sergeant Askew commanded the vanquished team: The following are the scores : MOTUEKA SECTION.
We are informed that a. friendly match, to come off in about three week’s time, is being arranged between a team of the Motueka and Takaka Mounted Rifles, the firing to take place at Takaka. Several band practices have been called lately by the Bandmaster, Mr C. Avery, but they have been adjourned on account of the absence of members, only about, half of them putting in an appearance. This state of affairs is both discouraging and unsatisfactory to those who have the interest of the band at heart. The members are expected to turn out on Coronation Day and it will be necessary for them to piactice at least three nights. If they wish to acquit creditably on the 9th of August. The next practice is fixed for Thursday evening, when we hope there will be a lull muster. On account of the death of Mr Daniel Bate there will be a vacancy caused in the Riwaka Road Board, the Waimea County Council, the Wharf Board and the Nelson Land Board. Mr Bate was “a Government nominee of the last mentioned body, and we presume the Government will take steps to appoint to the position another resident from this side of the who is well acquainted with the Crown Lands and needs of the district.
The Golden Bay News says:—The business people of Takaka announce m this issue that after the 4th August they will close their premises at the hours ruling in the larger centres; this will be a great been to employees and will no doubt be thoroughly appreciated. It will also tend to assist all outdoor sports, by releasing a number of young people to take part in them. For some time past the hands employed at the stores, etc., have been under a great disadvantage through having to work 12 hours a day, and thereby having no time for out-door exercise ; they have never received the benefit of the eight hoius system, though it has been in vogue so long with respect to other trades. It is hoped, therefore, that the public will fall in with the new arrangement and so allow this class of the community the same privileges that others have so long.
