The present session of Parliament is the forty-third session attended by Sir Maurice O’Rorke, Speaker Of the House of Representatives; Sir Maurice has been a member of the House for eleven Parliaments. It is almost certain (says the Charleston Herald) that the Labour - Party intend to contest the Buller seat, and it is quite ou the cards that Mr John Forster, of Denniston, will be chosen for the battle. Among the candidates mentioned as likely to oppose Mi Colvin the chances of Mr F. F. Munro are considered most promising. The latter would prove a formidable opponent, and with a Labour candidate in the field his election would not be in the least surprising. In the Westport district alone he would be as strongty supported as Mr Colvin. . In a letter to the Napier Telegraph containing his offer of a site for the proposed Veterans’ Home, Mr W. Nelson writes : —“Some years back I purchased a site at Green meadows for a ‘Veteran’s Home,’ intending to occupy it myself, but the fates have ordained otherwise, as owing to the excessive profits made on meat freezing and the prospective gains accruing from my share in the Napier swamp reclamation I shall require to devote the whole of my tew remaining years to the dis- > nsition of my accumulated wealth. Taus 1 have much pleasure in giving 25 acres (more if necessary) of an excellent site for a ‘Veterans” Home. I leave the backing up of my proposal in your hands. Monte Carlo has a special cemetery for gambling victims who commit suicide. Since 1860 over 2000 graves have been dug. An outdoor pulpit is to be erected alongside St. James’ Anglican Church, Piccadilly, London, from which to address passers by. An East Coast traveller who recent [ ly rode from Te Awaite to Gladstone, counted 108 deer on the Te Awaite, besides four small mobs at Tahaba. A COUGH IS NOT A DISEASE, but a symptom.
