The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Ora Mota Iwi.” FRIDAY, JULY, 25, 1902

The annual meeting of the Riwaka Road Board is advertised to be held in the Riwaka Library at 6 p.m. on Friday next, the Ist August. Messrs Hewetson and Teece, of the Moutere, have started to cut the timber on the land acquired by them on Wills’ road. The machinery is running smoothly, and we are pleased to hear the firm have sufficient orders on hand to keep them busy for some considerable time to come. At the conclusion of the monthly meeting of the Motueka Masonic Lodge, held on Wednesday evening, the brethren took the opportunity of welcoming Bro. TI. O’B. Deck, their Worshipful Master, who has been absent from Lodge duties during the past six months. Light refreshments having been partaken of the health of Wor. Bro. Deck was proposed and responded to by that gentleman, who gave a most interesting account of his trip to and from South Africa, a good idea of the Boer people, the condition and nature of the country he saw, and especially testified to the military. skill of the officers in charge of the British regiments, the units of which were brave men —men to be proud of. The Takaka ratepayers have carried by a substantial majority the proposal t> borrow <£6ooo (six thousand pounds) in order to pay off their overdraft and put their roads and bridges in a proper state of repair. The settlers evidently believe in a policy of consolidating their indebtedness to save money and do things ina business like fashion. We direct attention to the special auction "sales, to be held in Motueka bv Messrs W. Riut and Sons next week. On Tuesday the firm will sell general drapery on account of MiTele nius, of Spring Grove and on Wednesday a sale of live stock, farming implements, furniture etc , will take place, commencing at eleven o’clock, ‘to be followed at one p.m. by the sale of ■ <lrapery. The following is a copy of the petinow being circulated amongst the J ivuersof timber wagons doing business m the Waimea County C mncil district : —We, the - undersigned carters in the districts included in the Waimea C mnfcy C mncil area, beg to request that you will reconsider the decision arrived at by your Council with reference to wheel traffic*.. We would point out that the me of a seven inch tyre means that seve- 1 or more h >rses will be re phi-el t) draw the

hv&gon, and that lit' Wotikb be/imjebisn , ble on some of work, A team of that number. We beg to suggest that - the bye Jaw be altered fixing the width At Sin for a team of two or three horses* increasing the width one inch; ‘ for each additional , horse. The license fee agreed to is ; altogether too high and oppressive and means, if not altered,' that the carters*! thirty in number would contribute! the sum oth£72U towardsi the -revenue of the Council, an amount altogether out of proportion to the total cost of the maintenance of tlie roads used. We therefore beg respectfully to ask that you will reconsider the decision arrived at on the 3rd July 1902 and agree to the requests contained herein. \ We direct the attention< of our read*' ers to the replace advertisement of Mr P. G. Moffatt of the Motueka Cash Store,, in which the 1 public are asked to trade within the Empire by purchasing Canadian wall papers. ■ -" His Worship the’' Mayor, Mr ‘ J. ! SJ f ! Wrafct, has received a telegram from the Government stating that the Coronation of the King has been officially fixed for the 9th of August. A meeting of the Coronatfon SubCommittee is called for Tuesday next, at B p.m., to be held in the High School. Complaints have reached us from Riwaka of the reckless discharge of loaded firearms. It is no uncommon thin" for the residents to hear Mauser bullets .vhistling past them during the early part of the evening. This practice of firing guns loaded with bullets is most reprehensible and attended with grave danger and we trust this protest will have the effect of putting a stop to it. We u nderstand several ‘ football fixtures will be played during the next few weeks. Teams are expected from Takaka and Nelson, the return match against Collingwood will come off at the last mentioned place. Mr James Smith, an old and respected settler of Dovedale died this week* The deceased, who was 62 years of age, was associated with the Sunday school for many years as teacher and during the last twenty years nevetmissed one Sunday in artending to his duties. The Provisional Directors of tl e Motueka Fruitgrowers’ Co-operative 1 Society have instructed their solicitors, Messrs Adarns and Kiugdon to at once take the necessary steps to register the company, the required’ number of shares having being taker) up and the articles of association signed. It is fully anticipated the plant will be erected and ready for next season’s operations. We have to acknowledge the receipt of the quarterly issue of the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Guide. The next meeting of the Motueka Literary and Debating Society will be held on Monday evening when the old age pension scheme will be discussed. It is anticipated the debate “as to the present system “of administration will be an interesting one. It has been suggested that a meeting of residents of Motueka and Riwaka interested in horse racing be held at an early date to consider the advisability of holding hack races on the King’s Birthday, the 9th of November. The date is a good one, and as there are no fixtures in Nelson or other parts of the Province, the affair could be made a success. A meeting of ,the Oddfellows’ Executive Committee for this district was. held in Motueka on Tuesday last, when Bro R. Hursthouse resigned the office of Provincial Corresponding Sec etary- Bro Charles Fry, of Riwaka, was ' unanimously elected to the j position, and Bro H. Rumbold was ap--1 pointed Trustee in place of Bio Fry.
