ARBOR DAY.

At the last meeting of the Mqtueka School Committee an interesting discussion took place on the letter received from the Acting Premier in reference to the observance of a holiday on Arbor Day and the advisability of planting suitable. tr?es on that day. The acting chairman ami members of the Committee were unanimously of opinion that it would be' a good idea t > procure some two or three hundred pinus insignis or macrocarpa trees and get the school children to plant them on the Beach road, next to Trewavas’ section. Mr Knapp undertook to interview .Mr Chapman and obtain the trees and Mr Harris, the headmaster, will accompany the scholars to the spit. It was remarked by Mr Knapp and others that if the t-ees were protected whilst young, an excellent spot for a picnic would be made in a year or two. The matter will probably be brought up at the meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday next and if that body will erect and maintain the fencing necessary,^Arbor Day of. 1902 will be associated with pleasant remembrances in years to come.
