The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Ora Mota Iwi.” TUESDAY, JULY 8, 1902.
At the last meeting of the Wairnea County Council Major Frauklyn mentioned that there was a movement on foot on this side of the Bay to separate from that body by establishing # County Council to administer local Government. The question has been discussed of late, as a number of r atepayers consider th ' roads, etc., are neglected, B and that their rates are collected for the up-keep of roads from which they derive no benefit. The act under which County Councils work gives ratepayers the right to apply for separation providing the proposed area of such new Council is not less than two hundred thousand acres and that a certain number of ratepayers interested sign a petition in support of such application. We remind our readers of the gymnastic Exhibition to be given in the Institute on Wednesday evening by members of the Nelson Young Men’s Institute. The programme arranged is a good one, consisting of dumb-bell exercises, parallel and horizontal bars, etc. interspersed with leadings and recitations. Similar exhibitions have been given in Nelson eliciting applause and approbation from the audiences. The physical development of the rising generation is now-a-days receiving more attention than was the case years ago and it is gratifying to learn that in Motueka the classes formed by Miss Deck are being well attended, with beneficial and pleasurable resu Its. We remind the public of the presentation to be madu to ex Constable Thomas Boy as at the Church of EngSchool this evening. Word has been received that Capt. Deck will reach Wellington on Thurs-day-and that lie may be expected in Motueka next Saturday.. The Bawaka Road Board notifies that on and after this date that body will not lipid itself responsible for any accidents that?, may occur on the Riwaka Yalley and Sandy Bay roads. A start, was made with the stonebreaker. yestea day mor nin£r,.wlien seve - ral members of: the Borough. Council, as well! as the- Overseer were present. The-machine did good work, the matoricili turned ouf- being an excellent
sample and, to the supeifieial observer at any rate, preferable to the gravel that has been placed upon ther roads - in some localities.' We are pleased to bear that Mr D, Bate, of Riwaka, who underwent an .operation at Nelson on Sunday last, is improving and we trust he will be restored to good health , once more. We understand there is every prosof a Cadet Corps being established in connection with the Motueka Borough Schools. The idea is a good one and we trust the parents will readily give their permission and assistance in the matter, for such a corps is beneficial to the boys in many ways. Messrs Wratt and Beuke, members of the Motueka Wharf Board f met yesterday and passed accounts. Other business could not be transacted, as it appears the three members must be, present. The absurdity of such a condition of things must be apparent to all and is a strong aigur ent in favour of an increase in the number, whether the members are nominated, as is practically the case now, or directly elected by the ratepayers, which we maintain should be the proper course.
