The surest way to ward off pneumonia is to use Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy on the first appearance of the cough or cold. It always cures andjCiires quickly. A. Manoy sells it. " r -
k The conditions of our old age pensions sastern is not satisfactory to Mr Atkinson, M.H.R., and he told an audience hist week at Wellington that there must b? a large number of undeserving t.eople in receipt of the.pension. It was impossible to check deceptions, and that was why the cost of the scheme went on increasing. The first year it cost LI 57,094, the s-'-oond year L 197,000, and last year it rose to L 207,000. There were 12,405 pensions in force on March 31st of last year. There could not be more than 24,000 persons over 65 years of age in the colony, so that half the New Zealanders over 65 years of age were poor. It did seem an impossibility that theie could be such general poverty in the land, and that half, the people over 65 years should be in a position to qualify for the pension. The ruling prices of grain at the present time show, (says the Auckland Herald) a smart advance on those of last year, and those grain merchants who entered into contract, with the farmers ltst year for the supply of oats, to be delivered now, are benefiting to a large extent. A grain merchant stated in evidence at the Magistrate's Court that he had already purchased oats only just planted, which were to be delivered to him next year at a fixed price and in good condition. Council engaged in the case said far mers in the Pukekohe district, who contracted last year to supply oats at the present period to grain merchants for prices from £3 to L 3 10s a ton, were very sore in the matter, as the retailers were receiving from L 5 to L 6 . a ton forthe produce supplied and the far merswere bound to fulfil their contract. The witness said this was so.
