MOTUEKA BRASS BAND.

A complimentary social ana smoke concert to commemorate the return from South Africa of Corporal Grooby, of the Seventh Contingent, was given by the old members of the Motueka Brass Band on Friday night. The function was held in the Band Hall and was well attended by bandsmen ; there were also present, by invitation, Messrs McFarlane, Brougham, A. I. Manoy. Moffatt, Boundy. Talbot and Delaney. The Chair was occupied by Mr McFarlane, who hoped those present would do fall justice to the good things placed before them. The wants of the inner man having been satisfied the chairman called upon Bandsman Knapp to propose the toast of the evening, that of “ Our Guest.’’ Mr Knapp, in a few choice words asked those present to drink the health of Corporal Grooby, an old bandsman, who had just returned to Motueka after serving his country in South Africa. Messrs Moffatt, Brougham and McFarlane also spoke, the latter hoping their guest would once more join the band. Corporal Grooby briefly returned thanks for their kind reception and stated that at present he had no prospects of staying in the district but if he did settle down here he would again bacome a member of the Band, The toast of “ Prosperity of the Band ” was also given and the remainder of the evening passed pleasantly, siveral songs having been given by Messrs Talbot, McFarlane, Brougham, Delaney, Gallagher, and a recitation by Mr W. Moffatt. The meeting concluded by the singing of Auld Lang Syne and God save the King, the Band joining in.

Mr McFarlane who was invited to attend/and take the chair, explained the object of the meeting, which was to formally accept Mr Manoy’s offer to pay the Band’s liabilities to Messrs. Begg and Co., for the instruments they were using. It was unanimously resolved that Mr Manoy’s offer be accepted. Messrs Manoy, McFarlane and Knapp were appointed to act as trustees, the whole of the hand property to be vested in them for use of hand. Resolved'that the secretary be asked to take immediate steps to procure the small balance of the funds in hand from the Bank of New Zealand. The trustees suggested that the secretary also communicate with the Registrar of Friendly Societies re registration of the Band. Resolved, That Messrs McFarlane and Knapp confer with Mr Manoy as soon as possible, and arrange the necessary business with Begg and Co. of Dunedin.

A meeting of members and intending members of the Motueka Brass Band will be held in the Band Hall on Wednesday evening at seven o’clock.
