CORRESPONDENCE.

Sir : In yc«r report of a late meeting of the Motueka Borough Council, I notice, in connection with the Coronation festivities, that complaint was made of the hardship inflicted on the Borough ratepayers in having to provide entertainment for outside children whose parents contributed little or nothing to the celebration funds. I shall be obliged if you will permit me to explain that the Teachers of the neighbouring schools and myself have received an invitation to take part along with the children of our schools in the festivities at Motueka. We did not ask for this invitation': we did not se.ek it . it was courteously extended to us by a committee elected, I undei*stand, at a public meeting held in Motueka, and therefore presumably entitled to act on behalf of the people of the Borough; I may add that it is not usually considered decent to invite a person to an entertainment and then grumble that he has not contributed to the cost. I can also add—what I know to be the case—that the carping spirit shown in the matter is keeping away some who would otherwise be present at the festivities. I am, etc., B. D. Easton. Bower Moutere, June 25, 1902. [The above letter has been published in full. It refers to a discussion which took place at the last meeting of the Borough Council and was written before the Coronation ceremony was postponed. Ed. M.S.] Sir : I don’t know what the Burgesses of Motueka think about some of the remarks made by the Councillors at the late meeting of the Council, but X think it was bad taste, with a touch of paltry meanness thrown in, lor teat body to object to us living in the country bringing in our children, after receiving an invitation from the worthy secretary of the committee, to take part in the proceedings and to sit down ti-» a tea. We did not ask for the invitation and if the Councillor looks at such a demonstration as we mtennsu to have in such a narrow minded way, the sooner he quits being a member the better. I am, etc., Ngatimoli.
