Total deaths . . . . 20,952 Returns then published showed that of 2,937 officers and 68,311 men invalided from South Africa, 7,478 died and 5262 were discharged unfit for duty. From the beginning of the war to the 14th ult., the number of Boers either killed, captured, or surrendered is approximately 62,580, and a few weeks previously the strength of the enemy in the field was estimated at something over 8,000. The cost of the operations in South Africa was stated on the 27th ult. to have amounted to L238,000,00y.
