The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Ora Mota Iwi.” FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 1902.

We are informed that Captain Deck, of the Ninth Contingent, has left South Africa for New Jealand. His many friends will be pleased to hear this news.

During ..the winter months Messrs Brown and Kerr the well known watchmakers and jewellers, will open their Motueka branch on Fridays and Saturdays onlv. Mr A. Brown, of the Nelson staff will be in charge. Tenders are called for one non-alco-holic refreshment booth for the use of the public on Coronation Day. Tenders must be sent in to the Secretary, Mr Jenkins, by seven p.m. on Tuesday next.

It is notified elsewhere that the Rev. W . J. Wni ; a,ms, of Nelson, will deliver a lecture in the* Institute Hall, Motueka, on Tuesday next. . The subject seleeted, “Battlefields of NauA,” should draw a crowded house, especially as the reverend gentleman lias lately travelled over the scenes, thereby enabling him to .speak lucidly and authoritatively on the subject. Moreover, the British-Boer war has been occupying the attention of the public throughout the world for some years past and for that reason the lecture, which is to be illustrated with limelight views, will be listened to with interest ; added to by the fact that Mr Williams is an excellent platform speaker. Mr J. A. Chisholm, of Nelson, will be in Motueka from Tuesday to Friday next, both days inclusive, for the purpose of sight testing, etc. THE UNLUCKY BOY is always getting his fingers burnt, his hand cut or his shoulder sprained. His parents should keep a bottle of Chamberlain s Pain Bairn in the] house. This is a liniment of superior’! merit;. One application gives relief. Try it. A. Manoy sells it. j-uf** JOB PRINTING of every description xeciitei' with neatness and despatch at the Motuka Stir Offi::

» The mortal remains of the late Wm. Rain Anderson, of River View', Riwaka., were interred in the Riwaka Cemetery : on Wednesday afternoon, the Church of England burial service having been impressively given by the Rev. Thomas Johnston,. . A large number of settlers from Riwaka and adjacent districts attended to pay a last tribute of respect to the deceased. The bearers were Messrs H. Everett, Brougham, J. and C. Fry, W. Rowling and T. Holyoake. Preparations are well in hand for the plain and fancy dress ball to be held in the Institute Hall on Coronation night. All being well, no doubt many citizens and others will take the opportunity of being present to conclude the day’s festivities by “ tripping the light fantastic toe.” Mr Robert Staples, has kindly granted the Peace and Coronation celebrations committee the use, free of charge, of one of the paddocks on his estate near the Motueka Bridge, in which it is proposed to hold the carnival on the 26th instant. It is considered the most convenient and centrally situated ground for the purpose. We feel sure Mr Staples’ offer will be appreciated by the public. A friendly billard, cribbage, and euchre tournament, between residents of the Borough and Riwaka, was held at Holyoake’s Hotel on Wednesday evening, when, to use the words of a well-known resident, the “ Motueka boys wiped the floor with their opponents,” they having pulled off all matches. The “ belligerents ” afterwards sat down and enjoyed an excellent cold collation at the expense of the vanquished j who, however, have firmly resolved t > reverse the position of affairs when the next tug of war comes off*. As one of the contestants remarked, “ Barkiss is willin’.” Messrs W. Rout and Sons., of Nelson, will hold a clearing sale of live and dead stock at Motueka* on account Richmond Hursthouse, Esq, on Wednesday next, commencing at 11 a.m. ; also, at 2 p.m., 23 acres good agricultural land, being part of the Northwood Estate, and situated in the Bor ough of Motueka. Particulars will be found in our advertising columns.

There is a coal famine in Motueka just now the local dealers being unable to replenish their stocks. This is unfortunate as artificial heat is required just now to keep one from being frozen atnights and sometimes during the day. The Rev. W. J. Williams, an expresident of the New Zealand Methodist Church, is announced to preach in Motueka on Sunday n~xt, morning and evening. The subjects of discourse are advertised elsewhere. In the afternoon Mr Williams will conduct divine service at Lo.ver Moutere.

Messrs W. Rout and Sons., Auctioneers and land agents, of Nelson, will be pleased to meet clients and others wishing to do business, at Holyoake’s Hotel, in the evenings of Tuesday and Wednesday next. We ai-e informed efforts are being made to fore-.a.deputation of citizens to wa*it upon the I3ox‘ong , h _ Council on Tuesday evening in order tu induce the Councillors to vote an extra sum od money in aid of the Coronation festivities.
