THE PRINCE OF WALES.
Though the Heir-Apparent is only the twentieth Prince of Wales, the title is over @00; years old r and is claimed to 4 be the most ancient princely title in the world.. Even ; “Dauphin'’ and “Prince of Asturias” are of later creation. As Kang Edward was made Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester at the tender age of. 29. days,, the terms of investiture used sound distinctly curious. They run as follow : —“We do ennoble and invest with the said principality and earldom r by girding him with a sword, by putting a coronet on his head, and a gold ring on his finger, f and also by delivering a gold rod into his hand, that he may preside therefore and may direct and these parts to yield to him and his heirs Kings of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for ever.” The Prince of Wales’s coronet cons’sts of gold, not jewelled, comprising Maltese crosses and fleur de-lis alternately, surmounted by one arch only, in the centre of which is the orb and cross. The three ostrich feathers, with the motto “Ich Dien” (I serve), are said to have been assumed first by Edward the Black Prince, who slew John, King of Bohemia, from whose helmet he took the plumes and motto. —Melbourne Age.
