The North Otago Times has heard of 20 tons to the acre being obtained from a crop of potatoes in the Totara district. This crop was growing orr land easily drained, but many of the crops in the low-lying ground have partially rotted away. Carpenters in Gisborne are demanding an increase of pay from Is 3d to Is 4d per hour, and also that wages be paid by cash instead of by cheque. A Cure for Corns.--The ordinary climbing ivy furnishes a very inexpensive and easily obtainable remedy Take a few of the leaves (say :tb< ut a dozen), saturate for about throe days in strong vinegar sufficient to cover them. The leaves may be laid on as a plaster before putting the stockings on in the morning, or the solution inav be used as a paint with a camel’s hairpencil. The danger of a dry season in Victoria is now felt to be great, and it, will be increased with every additional day of fine weather. When the autumn rain produced a spring in the grass, a good winter was thought to have been assured, but now even the most sanguine realise that they were too hopeful. As far as the prospects of the crops are concerned, much yet depends upon the future, but the grazing interests are already suffering. The early dairying season which was recently anticipated will not now be realised, while pastoral prospects have generally taken a change for the worse. .
