FOOTBALL.
A very interesting game of football was played on Saturday last on the cricket ground between a local team and a Nelson team composed of seniors and juniors, all members of the Nelson Football Club; their names being as follows:—Wright, Kitebing, Houlker (2), McCabe, Campbell, Kinzett, Pratt, Friday, Papps, Palmer, Rogers, Griffin, Cook (2). Campbell captained the visiting team and Petiha acted in a similar capacity for the Motueka boys. The play was somewhat one sided the Nelson team showing some excellent passing, and altogether displaying more scientific knowledge of the game ; nevertheless the local boys fought a plucky battle. The match resulted in a victory for Nelson by four tries and a goal to nil. Pratt converted the goal. At the close of the game cheers were given for each team. The refe'ree was Mr Grace and the touch judge B. Bunny for Nelson and J. McFarlane, Motueka. At the conclusion of the game both teams sat clown to an excellent repast, at the Pc st Office Hotel to which full justice was done. The v s to:s left by the Lily at eleven o’clock, after having spent a most enjoyable day. It is expected the return match will be played at Nelson about the 26th of June.
