Mr Seddon will (says a London correspondent) be the third freeman of St. Helen’s, where he served an apprenticeship in the iron foundry of Messrs Dalglish. The two others are Aiderman Sir David Gamble, C. 8., and Alderman Richard Pilkington, M.P.. A writ claiming a thousand pounds damages for breach of promise of marriage has been servad on a Dunedin grocer. Canon Banks-Smith, of Tasmania, died last week. He was thee last of the Tasmanian clergymen drawing a pension from the Imperial Government, and for over 40 years he had been incumbent of St. George’s parish. He had reached his 82rd year. Lambs are making their appearance early this year in Taranaki. Farmers are hoping the present fine weather will continue for a few weeks.
