MOTHER A INSTITUTE

The annual meeting of the above was held on Friday evening, when there was a limited number of members X>resent. Mr F. W. Thorp was voted to the chair and after explaining the object of the meeting called upon the Treasurer, Mr G. S. Huffam, to ri-ad the report and balance sheet, duly audited by Mr Fred Symes. The report was as follows : During the year ending April 30th, 1902, the receipts were as follows:—Library fund, os 6d ; Institute fund, 12s 7d; total, 13s id. This is less than last year by £4 6s, and £25 os id, for Library and Institute respectively. This i^/partly accounted for by snbscriptions f amounting to £3 6s, which were just in time for last year’s balance, were just too late tor this year; also last year’s balance was increased by £2l 12s, from die sale of skates and forms. After making allowance for this the total is £4 8s id, less than last year: The Government subsidy this year was £7 16s Bd, being 2s iod more than last year. The balance carried forward this year is L 43 2s 2d, as against L 46 8s iod last year. The Chairman stated that during the past season, the Committee had increased its orders for books, which naturally lessened the balance to credit. On the whole, the statement of accounts was satisfactory. On the motion of Mr A. Miller, seconded by Mr A. 1. Manoy the report and balance sheet were adopted. The chairman referred to the formation of a Literary and Debating Society. He gave an account of what the Committee suggested with reference to amalgamation which he considered would be a step in the right direction and he felt certain that in time it would .be of great benefit to all. After discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr G. Huffam, seconded by Mr A‘. Manoy, That in the opinion of this meeting it would be beneficial to both the Institute and the Debating Society to affiliate. Votes of thanks were accorded to Mr Symes, Auditor, and to the old Committee, for past services. The following Committee was elected for the ensuing year Messrs Thorp, Huffam, Miller, A. I. Manoy and E. Parker. A vote of thanks to the chairman brought the meeting to a close. Immediately afterwards, the Committee met and elected Mr Thorp chairman, E. Parker Secretary, and G. Huffam Treasurer. It was decided to meet on the second Friday in each month and to hold a plain or fancy drees ball on the evening of Coronation day.
