The garden party advertised to take place to-morrow on the cricket ground* promises to be well attended by those who sympathise with the object in view, namely, to provide the wherewithal to renovate the local Methodist parsonage. The ladies of the congregation have taken the matter in hand and they intend to make the afternoon an enjoyable one to those who wend their way towards the grounds. In addition to the ladies’ costume cricket ma'ch to be got off, other popular games will be in full swing. At the request of a number of burgesses, Mr William Boyce has decided to become a candidate for the vacancy in the Motueka Borough Council, consequent upon the election of Mr J. S. Wratt as Mayor. A report of the football match held on Saturday unavoidably held over. The report of the Committee of Fruitgrowers upon the department of Agriculture’s demonstration orchard at Otahuhu has been received by the department. It will be remembered that this orchard was selected in order that the apple trees in it might be made the medium for testing methods of combatting the codlin moth pest. There was an agreement of opinion that the orchard was the worst infested in the district. Mr W. A. Boucher conducted the experiments, andlseverai visits to the orchard were made by the committee above mentioned. In the conclusion of the report drawn up for the committee, it is stated :— 11 Practically, for commercial purposes, the fruit in the orchard was free from codlin moth. No doubt the spraying work of last year helped considerably in bringing about this satisfactory result, although the condition of last season’s fruit did not show the good that was being done in the destruction of thousands of grubs which would otherwise have had to be dealt with as egg-laying moths this season.”
