A letter received in Sydney from a lance-corporal of the Ist Oxfordshire Light Infantry contains the following passage : —"Cronje has written to De Wet, and the letter has passed the army censor. It is to the effect that if Be Wet does not surrender and put an end to this useless and hopeless war he (C*-oiije) will raise a burgher force from the prisoners of war, by sanction of the British Government, and hunt him down. Cronje also warns De Wet to beware of the burghers who bear animosity towards him for keeping on such a hopeless and murderous war, and causing them to be held in bondage so" long." An English engineering firm has just secured the contract for the supply and erection in Northern China of a large flour mil! which is to be fitted up on the mos-t modern principles. Several American firms tendered unsuccessfully for the work, A Kansas farmer bad adopted a plan by which he claims to have increased the yield of this winter's wheat threefold or fourfold, and it has become known by his own name as the "Campbell method." When his wheat is sown, he rolls it, and repeats the process again and again after it is up. Next he turns his cattle into the fields keeping them there till winter sets in. Repeated rollings are also given in the spring until the wheat is ready to joint. The object is to compress the surface of the soil and prevent the evaporation of the moisture around the roots. It is said that by this process forty bushels of wheafrhas been produced where, under ordinary circumstances, only ten or twelve bushels would have been grown. It must be supposed that land in Kansas is extremely loose if it requires such repeated rollings. Certainly the best medicine known is Sander and Sons'Eucalypti Extract.
