DIRECT STEAM SERVICE.

A meeting of the Committee appointed to deal with the direct steam service to Wellington contract met on Wednesday evening, when there were present Messrs T. Pattie (chairman), Wratt, Trewavas, Canavan, Banfield, Guy and Low. The chairman read a letter from Mr K. McKenzie, M.H.R., dated 10th April in which the writerstated that he was forv.-arding draft copy of cantract, and requesting an early consideration of same. Mr McKenzie also mentioned that he would like to have same returned, in order that he might be able to interview Sir Joseph Ward when that gentleman again visited Nelson. A lengthy discussion took place on the first clause numbered 1 in the contract which provided "for a weekly service for six months and fortnightly for the remainder of the year: It was ultimately agreed to strike it out, put No. 2 (twice weekly etc) in its place, and add following : "an alternative service three times a fortnight from 20th pecember to 28th February, weeklo from Ist March to 30th June, and fortnightly from the Ist July to the 19th of December." The substituted clause was moved by Mr J. Guy, seconded by Mr Wratt, and carried unanimously.
