CANTERBURY MARKETS. Christchurch, April 3. The following are current prices paid to farmers, f.b.b., Lyttelton, and free of commission, except where otherwise specified : Wheat: Prime milling, Tuscan 3s 2d to 3s 3d ; Hunter’s pearl and velvet 3s 2d to 3s 3d ; new 3s 2d to 3s 3d at eountry stations. New oats. Long feed, 2s Od ; short feed, 2s Id, in small bags ; milling Canadians 2s 2d to 2s 3d at country stations. Barley (new) —3s to 3s 3d at country stations.
Beans : 2s 8d to 2s 9d, f.o.b. Peas: Partridge, 3s to 3s 3d ;• Blue Prussians 4s at country stations. Flour (millers’ quotations): Roller £8 10s. Sharps : £4 5 s Pollard : £4 10s per ton. ' j. Bran : <£3 15s. Oatmeal : .£l3 f.o.b. Hay: £2 10s to £2 15s delivered. Oafcsbeaf chaff: 47s 6d to 50s at country: stations. Onions : £2 5s at country stations. Potatoes : Beauty of Hebron, 30s, kidneys 30s, derwents for forward delivery, 30s at country stations. Grass Seed—Ryegrass, prime heavy town dressed 4s 3d to 4s 6d, cocksfoot, 3gd to 3fd, ryegrass, Italian, town dressed 4s Bd. Dairy Produce ; Cheese, factory 4d to 4gd, dairy 34d to 4d ;• butter, factory local, lid, North Island lOd, dairy Bdto 9d, salt (in boxes) 8d ; bacon, hams, 5d to 6gd ; factory bacon and hams, |d higher, fo.b. STOCK SALES. Christchurch, April 2. Fat cattle. —128 yarded, mostly light weight heifers and cows ; under 20 steers. The short supply caused a rise of Is per 1001 b. Beef brought 18s 6d to 22s 6d ; steers, £6 15s to £lO and £l3 10s ; prime polled Angus bullocks and heifers, £5 10s to £7 7s 6d ; cows, £5 to £7 2s 6d. Fat sheep—4ooo penned, mostly ewes ; very few good wethers. Best wethers brought 15s to'l7s 5d ; others, 12s 6d to 14s 6d. There were too many ewes for the trade, and a consequent drop in prices except for a few extra prime, which mode 14s to 15s 3d; good, useful trade sorts, lls to 13s 6d ; inferior, 7s 6d to 10s. Fat lambs —751 penned, mostly unfinished sorts. A dull sale. A line of 131 for export brought 12s 6d to 12s 7d ; 231 butchers’, 9s 3d to 13s lid ; the balance passed at 11s to 11s 9d. Store sheep —Over 14,000 penned, iucluding good lines of forward wethers and good breeding ewes. These, with good forward lambs, met an improved sale, gbut other sorts were about the same. Forward wethers, 12s 2d to 12s lOd ; others, 10s 2d to 11s Id ; backward and small. 7s Id to 9s 6d ; good wethers and maiden ewes, 10s to 13s Id ; merino wethers, 3s 8d ; two tooth ewes, 14s 3d to 15s 3d . fourtooth, 12s Id ; two and four tooth, 12s 6d : six- tooth, 13s; four, six and eighttooth, 8s 3d to 11s 4d ; sound-mouthed 6s to 8s 3d ; aged, 5s to 5s 9d ; boilers, Is 9d to 2s 3d ; lambs, forward sorts, 9s to 10s lid ; fail, 5s Id to 8s ; inferior, Is 7d to 3s 3d. Pigs—soo yarded. Many unfinished in the fat pens, and a weaker -ale. Baconers, 34s to 43s fid, up to* 51s 6d (an extra heavy line), equal to 3d to 3|d per lb ; porkers, 20s to 30s, equal to 3gd. Big stores were in demand at 15s to 22s ; smaller almost unsaleable at 7s to 12s ; suckers and weaners, 3s to 6s.
Dunedin, April 2
Fat cattle : 218 head yarded. There was a decline in prices, except
for a few pens. Extra prime ox beef brought 22s to 25s per 1001 b ; cow and heifer, 18s to 21s 6d * best bullocks, £8 to £9 10s ; extra, up to £ll 10s ; good, L7to L 7 15s ; best cows and heifers L 6 to £7 ; extra, £8 : good, £5 to £5 17s 6d.
Fat sheep : 2532 penned. A slow sale with lower prices, .except for extra good wethers. Best wethers; 14s to 15s ; extra, 17s 9d ; good, 12s 6d to 13s 6d best ewes, 10s to 12s fid; good, 8s fid to 9s 6d,
Lambs: 587 penned. Best, 10s to 11s ; extra, 12s 3d ; good, 8s to 9s 6d. Pigs: 147 penned. The demand for all but suckers was fully maintained. Suckers, 7s to 11s* slips, 13s to 16s ; stores. 18s to 22s ; porkers, 24s to 325; baconers, 38s to 565; big pigs, 62s to 87s.
JOHNSON VILLE STOCK SALES,
Messrs Freeman R. Jackson and Co (m conjunction with Messrs Abraham and Williams) report that at their sale at Johnsonville, near Wellington, on Fiiday as follows :—We had an average yarding of cattle, which consisted of prime heavy-weight bullocks, with a few pens of lighter sorts. Beef made 21s ; best bullocks, L 8 10s to L 8 17s 6d ; medium bullocks, L 7 17s 6d to L 8 7s 6d ; light bullocks, L 7 10s to L 7 12s 6d. A nice line of 18-month to two-vear-old heifers, in calf, brought 66s ; yearlings and 18-month empty heifers, 51s : yearling and 18-month steers, 455. An average yarding of sheep met with a dull sale, and best ewes being passed in at 10s 6d. Medium ewes made 8s 6d to 8s lOd ; wethers, 11s Id ; store wethers, 8s 2d ; fair lambs, 8s 3d ; others, 7s to 7s 6d.
