The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Ora Mota Iwi.” TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 1902.

Hi 6 residents of M.otueka and adjacent districts who take an interest in educational matters will he pleased to learn that already thirty names are on the roll of the Motueka District High School. This is a highly satisfactory state of affairs, distinctly encouraging to the teaching staff, and a complete answer to those who entertained doubts as to the advisability of establishing such ari institution in our midst ; the more so when it is remembered that the permanent habitation of teacher and pupils has not yet been properly furnished or* handed over to the School Committee, and that, so far, instruction has been given under such disadvantages as change of teachers, irregular attendance on account of hop and fruit picking, and the want of a suitable class room. We question very much if any other High School in the Colony, established in a district similar to this, has ever received such loyal support from parents and guardians ; when it becomes more generally known that the SC hool has highly qualified teachers and accommodation which is a credit to the community, vve feel sure the attendance roll will be lai < v elv increased and that pupils from such distant places as Takaka and Collingwood will attend. Moreover, it will be the aim of Messrs Harris and Wilkes to provide such tuition as will enable the scholars to hold their own at Colleges or Universities should they ever desire to attend such institutions. Motueka already has a splendid record ; it will not suffer at toe hands of the teachers just mentioned. In reference to-the new building it will be noticed that it is to be formally opened (provided authority is given before hand by the Nelson Education Board), on Wednesday afternoon when, no doubt, advantage will be taken by His Worship the Mayor, the Chairmen of the Board and the Committee, as well as other sympathisers with the cause of education, to felicitate the district and to speak words of encoux-agement to the teachers and pupils.
