It is estimated that £IOOO a year is paid in Masterton as fire insurance premiums on farm properties. A number of farmers in the Masterton dis trict have lately allowed their fire insurances to lapse, pending some definite and satisfactory arrangements being made by the Farmers’ Union. At a meeting of the Masterton blanch of the Farmers’ Union, a letter was read from the Taranaki branch in reference to insurance. The President mentioned that a South Island delegate had stated that they paid 12s 6d per hundred, while in the Noith they had to pay 16s and 17s, and as much as 20s and 22s 6d for outbuildings. Quoting from the official gazette of 1901 the total loss by fire in the colony was £370,000, of which £2700 was farm properties, and a portion of that was not covered by insurance. The matter was eventually allowed to stand over.
