Since the : outbreak of hostilities in South Africa trade between Australia and that colony has assumed large dimensions. The frozen meat section in particular has reaped immense benefit, and almost every week, at times more frequently, a vessel leaves Sydney heavily laden with supplies for the troops. The steamer Langton Grange, which leaves the port to-day (wrotuthe Sydney Telegraph of sth March) for Durban, Capetown, and London, is no exception. She took 14,109 carcases of mutton from Sydney, 33,991 carcases arid 14,890 legs of mutton and 95 cases of kidneys from Geelong, and 13,953 quarters of beef, 300 boxes of butter,, ,500 horses, 75 . scows,, -and. a large quantity of sundries from Queensland ports. The horses are intended as remounts for the troops: The world owes a lot to Mr J. L. Toole. He entered the profession, in 1852, and for oven forty years he kept . people in one long roll of laughter. A slight exception however once occurred" in Edinburgh, where Mr Toole-gave . a pass to his Landlord, who was a staunch member, of the kirk. That night the comedian played to his landlord, and gave some of his most, killing jokes,, but the “glide man” never once cracked a smile.. After the performance,, with mxied feelings, Toole asked his patron how he had enjoyed himself. “VeryAveel,” remarked the Scotsman, “but tnon, I could hardly keep frae laughing !”
