In July, 1899, Mr- G. Marconi, then 22 years of age, arrived in England from Italy, bringing with him a method of sending messages across space without intervening wires. The first trials in England were made between a room in the General Post Office, London, and an impromptu station on the roof, some 100 yards distant.

Later on trials in the open were made od Salisbury Plain, across the Bristol Channel, and elsewhere. Mr Marconi then went to Italy, and exchanged signals between a warship and the shore over a distance of twelve miles. Returning to England he succeeded in transmitting wireless messages between Salisbury and Bath. In 1899 great advances were made; a regular system of commanication was kept up between the East Goodwin Lightship and the South .Foreland Lighthouse, and on 27th April of the same year wireless messages were sent to France,

Next year wireless signals were interchanged between England and Belgium over a distance of 100 miles, and during the naval manoeuvres in the summer of 1900 war vessels talked over distances up to 160 miles. In 1901 lines commenced to employ the Marconi system, and on Friday, 16th August, of this year the Lueania talked fiom 6 p.m., till 2 a.m on Saturday, the 17th, maintaining connection with the Nantucket Lightship at the entrance to New York hat hour for a distance of 287 miles. Now comes the announcement that signals sent from the Lizard have been received from Mr Marconi at St John’s Newfoundland, 2500 miles away. Daily News.
