BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The’ordinary monthly meeting of the Motueka Borough Council was held on . Tuesday evening. Present: ITis Worship the Mayor (Mr R. Hursthouse), Crs Ryder, Knapp, Satheiley, Simpson, Moffatt, Thorp j and Wratt. Messrs A. R. Edwards and R. J. Trewavas, the newly elected councillors were present, and after subscribing to the statutory declaration, took their seats. The Mayor formally welcomed them and congratulated them upon their return. The new councillors shortly responded. • The minutes of the previous meeting af having been read and adopted, the gk Town Clerk, Mr Tarrant, thanked the for selecting him for the ■ position and stated that he would endeavour to discharge the duties to the best of his ability. The debit balance at the Bank of New Zealand was reported to be .£lO4 12s 3d. Accounts amounting to £5 8s were passed for payment. The following letter __ was received from the chairmrn of the Waimea County Council : I have the honour to inform you that the Council at its last meeting, held on the 6th instant, resolved under powers conferred by the Public Works Act, 1894, aud the amending Act of 1901, to call upon the boroughs within the County to assist in theupkeep of the County roads and bridges adjacent to the boroughs. The Council has deputed me to confer with the respective Mayors with a vievv to obtaining an amicable arrangement of the proportions, to be contributed. The portions in the scheme relating to your Borough are : —The Motueka Bridge and the main road from Motueka to and including the Jubilee Hall bridge. I shall be obliged therefore, if you can kindly see your way to appoint a place and date where I might meet you for the purpose above mentioned. The letter was discussed at some length and it was ultimately decided, on the motion of Cr Moffatt, seconded by Cr Ryder, That His Worship the Mayor meet the County chairman as requested. -- X Messrs J. C. Ohaytor and E. F. Burrell, trustees of the Fearon estate, waited upon the Council and submitted draft specifications of the proposed .street through North wood. A lengthy discussion ensued, during which the question of drainage was d iscussed. Ultimately it was resolved on the motion of Cr Simpson, seconded by Cr Moffatt, That the specifications just . read be approved. -• Proposed by Cr Ryder and seconded by Cr Knapp, That 12 inch pipes be put in at the south east corner of Lot 19 and this be done without prejudice, the Trustees not admitting that there is a public drain at this place. The following amendment was moved by Cr Wratt, seconded by Cr Moffatt, That the Trustees under the will of the late E. Fearon be requested 1 1 put in 12 inch pipes across the hollow at the eastern corner of Lot 19 (without preThe amendment was carried. The Trustees replied that they would put in the pipes as requested, but that they do not thereby admit any liability or that the hollow is a public drain. On the motion of Or Moffatt secondWr ed by Cr Wratt, it was resolved That the Trustees’ reply" be accepted and recorded on the minutes. Mr C hay tor also brought before the Council’s notice the question of paying , compensation for land acquired for the purpose of widening the streets on the eastern and western, sides of the estate It was agreed on the motion of Cr Moffat c, seconded by Cr Edwards, Thai the question of paying compensation to the trustees of the Fearon Estate f>r frontages on the eastern and -western boundaries of the estate deferr- *• „ .

Having thanked the Council for their patient hearing, Messrs Ohaytor and Burrell withdrew- - _ Mr H. E. Gilbert, on behalf of the Church of England Trustees, applied for permission to open up and use the right of way on the section of land at the rear of Brown and Kerr’s, in Stafford Street.
Permission granted, provided a culvert is placed over the ditch to the satisfaction of the Council’s Overseer.
Mr C. J. Bartlett applied for and’ was granted permission to remove the old Maori Church to section of land ad - joining his residence. m Cr Ryder drew attention to the dangerous state of the bridge near Mr S. Starnes’ property 7 , which needed immediate attention. He also referred to the - necessity of cleaning out the ditches and also the water tables.
The Inspector was instructed to have’ thn necessary repairs effected to the bridge and also to attend to the watertables and ditches in the Borough. It was resolved, on the,motion of Cr Moffatt, seconded by Cr Ryder, That the Inspector interview Mr Woodman and inform him that the cutting of noxious growth on the road adjoining his property is not done to the satisfaction of the Cotmeil and that he must do the work to the satisfaction of the Inspector within seven days. That proceedings be at once taken against Messrs John Limmer and A. Manoy 7 for failing to comply with the Council’s notice to clear gorse and erect fence, respectively. Cr Moffatt enquired if any word had been received from Messrs Duthie and Co., re jaws for the stone-breaker, ordered some time ago. The speaker mentioned that the new jaws should be placed in the machine and everything got ready for working it during the present month.
The Town Clerk was instructed to write to Messrs Duthie and Co on the subject.
It was agreed that the protective works committee should meet on Friday evening to pass accounts in connection with the work.
The accident insurance policy over the Council’s employes was renewed for another vear.
The meeting concluded at 10.50 p.m.
