The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. "Te Oranga Moti Iwi." TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 1902.
At the last meeting of the Executive of the North Canterbury District of the Farmers' Union a letter was read from the Agricultural Department stating that the question of the small birds nuisance would be considered by Cabinet before next session of Parliament. The settlers in this district are deeply interested in this question, and it will be a relief to them if the authorities legislate for the suppression of the pest. Every year sums of money are voted by the Council and neighboring R>ad Boards for the purchase of poisoned grain and bird's eggs, but such expenditure has not made any appreciable difference, and the loss to iVu'rtgrowers especially is serious. It has been acknowledged ' that more could be done if a systematic and universal system- of poisoning prevailed, such a course is not attainable so settlers are allowed to decide as whether or not they shall adopt measures to cope with the pest. Legislation is necessary,, and will be in the interests of all. It is considered by some that a Government has no right to interfete and say what the fruit grower or farmer should be compelled trdo in this or any other matter. But a moment's reflection should dispose of such a shallow objection. The same cry was raised when the Government of the day legislated to suppress scab in sheep - r : their enactment was strictly enforced, with the result that in the course of. a* few years the
Colong was declared clean'. It is useless to hope for relief until the question is taken in hand and dealt with by the Government and it would be well for all the branches of the Farmers' "Onion t! roughout the Colony to join with the North Canterbury district in urging the authorities to introduce a Bill dealing with the small birds pest during the approaching session of the New Zealand Parliament. \ "- ——. -^
