THE ARGENTINE.
Mr A.. Waters, formerly of Ashurst,, who recently left to try his fortunes in the Argentine, has written 'Mr T. Lowes, of Ashurst, explaining that he expects to be back in New Zealand next month. Mr Waters is not charmed with the prospects in the Argentine. He states that he has been informed by ohi residents of the country that sheep and cattle do not thrive so well as they did some years ago, especially sheep during the last six years, the presence of scab being, a great drawback. The writer-thinks the Argentine is quite 25 years behind the British colonies in a great many things, and he thinks that "New Zealand need not be afraid of Argentine competition unless better methods are adopted. At the same time he acknowledges it is a good country for both land and climate, in fact the latter is too dry. Mr Waters states that crime is rampant, and murders are committed every day, as there are a great many unemployed in the large cities and towns. It is estimated that there are over 1,000,000. Italians in the country. In religious matters the ways of the country are strange to an Englishman. Elections are held on the Sabbath Day, the trains run as usual, and the sacred day is also devoted to sales of property and live stock, and horse racing. Under theso circumstances, therefore, it is not surprising to find that Mr Waters has had enough of life in South America, and had made arrangements to give up his lease on the Ist of January last.
