The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Oranga Moti Iwi.” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1902.
Some time ago, Mr Charles Lewis, surveyor, of Taka ha, placed himself in communication with Mr T. E. Donne, of the Tourist 'Department;' with refeience to the desirability of erecting a small cottage at Table Land for the use of touris-ts who. visit that locality.
In support of his application, a requisition, numerously signed, is being circulated, the text of which is as follows :—r
We7‘ the undersigned residents of Takaka and Motueka districts, understanding that Mr Charles Lewis, surveyor, has offered to build a three roomed cottage at the -Table Land, Mount Arthur District, for the convenience of tourists and visitors, wish to point out to you the desirability of having this offer put into effect. There is no doubt that the locality is one of the healthiest, and that the scenery is equally satisfactory, in fact, this locality, as it becomes better known and easier of access, promises to be a favourite resort for visitors and even invalids. We are informed that Mr Lewis is now having timber sawn upon the Table Land, so that a more favourable opportunity could not occur for making a beginning towards bringing into notice this most favourable locality.; -
It has long been recognised ti at the Table Land is an excellent spot to visit during the summer months, the only drawback’ being the lack of accommodation, the nearest homestead being distant about fifteen miles. which means that those wishing to spend a few days in the neighborhood, are compelled to carry with them cooking utensils, tents, and Other indispensable articles. Table Land is about 33 miles away from Motueka ; a vehicle can be taken 17 miles, the rest of the journey having to be walked or negotiated on horseback. Once there the tourist, or invalid, is charmed with the locality. Within easy distance are Mounts Arthur and Peel, from which vantage points-the visitor obtains excellent panoramic views. On the westei n side of Mount Arthur, Lake Peel is within easy distance. The botanist .vho visits the Table Land will become enthusiastic over the native floral varieties to be gathered there ; in fact whoever has once visited the locality in question has nothing hut praise to bestow Upon it. It is to be hoped the request of the petitioners will be acceded to, especially ns no motives'of self interest are actuating Mr I iewis, or those who have signed. We understand Mr Roderick McKenzie M.H.R., who has been communicated with upon the subject, warmly approves of the object in view ; the public can, therefore, rest satisfied that he will support the appeal made to Mr Donne, as head of the Tourists Department. ■ X
