EVANGELINE’S DEATH.
The lovely child looks bright to-day; glad hopes, alas ! were vain, Forat the close of midnight dark the sombre message came. St Clair, her father so beloved, was quickly by her side : ‘‘ Oh S what is this; my own dear one? Not death, Oh God I” he,cried. Chorus. Open ye gates to that heavenly land, Soon will this bright spirit be there, Long she’s been waiting her Saviour to see, And rest in His mansions so fair. The child lay breathing painfully, her loved no aid could give ; “ Oh, Tom, my boy, this must not last; Oh, say my child will live !” “Dear master,” says the faithful slave, “ what God decrees must be.” ; But still the bitter cry went forth, “My darling, stay with me!” Chorus. Open ye gates.ety. She raised her glqri'ous eyes to his, he caught the faint, sweet tone, “ Eva will wait at the golden gate, to lead dear father home. Yet once again, the dear lips moved, “Joy, peace, and rest,” she said, And then, with one Jong mournful sigh, the child beloved was dead. • Chorus.
