BOROUGH COUNCIL.

—o The ordinary meeting of the Motueka Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: —His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Messrs Ryder, Knapp, Simpson, Satherley, Moffatt, Wratt., and Thorp. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed. Accounts ammounting to £4 16s fid (including the sum of £1 17s 6d for protective works) were passed for payment. Letters read as follows From Public Trustee re progress payment of £4 4s 8d being one-fifth of the amount expended, as per certificate forwarded by Mr A. Edwards ; from Inspector General’s office re representation on the Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and stating that m view of the amount paid by the Borough, it will be impossible to give representation to the Motueka Borough Council; from C. W. Hursthouse, Chief Engineer of Roads re lapsed agreements Trustees Rear on’s Estate applying for permission to construct a road through the property plan of which .vas enelosedV from Postal Department, declining to entei’tain the Council’s offer for the "old post office building. On the motion of Cr Moffatt, seconcled by Cr Ryder, it was decided to accede to the request of the Trustees of Fear oil’s Estate.

Mr H. A. Tarrant forwarded his resignation as Councillor which was acre pted. Applications for the position of Town Clerk and Overseer were received from Messrs H. A. Tarrant, and J. Spence Bryant.

Cr Thorp proposed, seconded by Cr Wiatt, that Mr Tarrant be appointed. Crs Thorp, Wratt, Moffatt, Satherley, and His Worship the Mayor favored the appointment of Mr Tairant. Cr Simpson proposed as amendment that Mr Bryant be appointed. Seconded by Cr Ryder.

On amendment being put, only Crs Simpson and Ryder voted for it. It was therefore lost, aud the appointment of Mr Tarrant was confirmed.

Cr Moffatt moved, seconded by Cr Wiatt, That the present Town Clerk prepare an agreement between the Town Clerk and the Council defining the duties of the office etc. Carried.

The Town Clerk reported that having received no word from Melbourne he had ordered a set of jaws for *the stone breaker from Messrs Duthie and C0.,-of Wellington.

It was agreed to sue all those who had failed to clear their sections of gorse, etc, as requested by the Council. Cr Moffatt moved, that Mr Manoy be requested to fence the section of land in High Street, as previously notified, within fourteen days, failing which he be prosecuted. Seconded by Ci Thorp and carried. It was resolved that the protective works committee deal with the accounts in connection with the work, and that the same be paid after they are certified to. The committee was also empowered to dispose of the plant upon completion of the job. On the motion of Cr Simpson, seconded by Cr Wratt, it was decided to forthwith collect the amounts promised in connection with tlie Glover’s overflow scheme.

The resignation of Cr Rankin as a Councillor was accepted, and the Town Clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to fill the two extra - ordinal v vacancies. - *

Permission was granted to Mr W. Moffatt to convey the old post office building across Stafford Street, on •to the section opposite, Mr Moffatt undertaking to give public notice, and to see that traffic was not impeded. It was resolved that the dog tax for

the current year be collected forthwith

Cr Knapp was authorised to sign cheques in place of Cr Rankin, resigned. ... The Council resolved itself into a special meeting and on the motion of Cr Moffatt, seconded by Or Ryder, decreed that the statutory half-holiday be on Wednesdays during the current year. / This concluded the business.
