A decision of considerable importance to the mercantile community has been given by Mr Turnbull, S.M., at Napier. An action was brought against the Napier Harbour Board to recover damages for goods damaged while in the Board's custody. His Worship gave judgment for the defendant. He held that the Board had acted as a warehouseman and not as a common carrier and that it had taken reasonable care of the plaintiff’s goods. An appeal has been lodged.
Atkinson—“ What’s the matter with your friend ? He seems very depressed. Henderson—“ Yes, he’s lown on liis luck. He’s dying to join the Yeomanry, but he doesn’t like sending in his name, A. Coward.” . Atkinson —“ But he has no need to put it in that way. Why can’t he give it in full , Henderson—“ That makes it all the worse, man; liis first name’s Adam.”
In one week, while he was on the West Coast, Sir Joseph Ward delivered thirty one speeches and attended seven dinners and a “social” given in his honour. The Premier needs to look to his laurels ! In addition he transacted an immense amount of Departmental business.
