SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the above • was held last night! Present: Messrs Moffatt (chairman) Wratt, .Eaiapp, and Hurstbouse. The meeting having. been called several days earlier in order to arrange for the Jubilee holiday it was decided to treat it as the ordinary one usually held on the first Monday . of, each month. , ~" Minutes of last meeting read and adopted. Accounts amounting to £7 12s lid were passed for payment;. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Nelson Education Board re allowances to Committee, stating that a committee would be set up to deal with the question ; from the Education Department re deaf, dumb, and blind children. The Chairman read a statement of accounts in connection with the school treat, which showed a balance in hand of 5s 3d, after paying expenses. The statement was approved of. The Headmaster furnished a report in which he stated the number on the roll was 161, being an increase of 14 and that the average attendance was 121 ;'if it increased the school would be entitled to another , probationer. Mr Lowe had kindly volunteered to assist in the school teaching until the assistant master had been appointed : he had observed Mr Lowers methods and found he was well qualified to take up the duties. The teachers of the school proposed to give a concert to raise money for the purchase of a bell to be placed in the tower. Certain alterations to the out buildings were suggested. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Hursthouse, seconded by Mr Boyce. that the Chairman be authorised to make the alterations ; the Chairman was also empowered to procure a small •school bell from Rankin and Sons. Mr H. Langford wrote thanking the Committee for the testimonirl forwarded to hirri. The two applications for the position of Assistant Master were duly considered and it was eventually decided to recommend F. J. Wilkes "for the position. The meeting then terminated.
A Wellington firm of merchants, having sent samples of butter to India with the object of testing the market thtre, has received the following reply from a Rangoon firm :—"The samples of butter you so kindly sent us duly came to hand, but we regret to say that we see no chance of any business. The freight is three times as much as we are now paying from Melbourne, which is out of the question. Then, again, we shall be at a great disadvantage as regards transhipments which aresure to be many. Under the circumstances, it is quite impossible to open up business, at least for the present."
The Motueka Mounted Rifles leave for Nelson on Sunday in order to take part in the military display next week. The Takaka corps will join, them here to-morrow.
