At a meeting of the Trustees of the Wesleyan Church held on Monday night it was decided to renovate the interior of the Church in High Street In order to raise the necessary funds to do the work it was decided to hold a sale of produce in the Motueka Institute Hall on the 19th of February. On account of the approaching carnival at Nelson, and the absence from the district of Mr D. Bate, the Chairman of the MotueUi Wharf Board, Mr R. Hurstbouse, lias fixed the next meeting for the 10th February, instead of Monday next. The Colonial Treasurer, through the Collector of Customs, Christchurch, acknowledges the sum of 2s 2d received by him as duty unpaid on "one silk blouse length/' The conscience-stricken one desired the amount to be acknowledged through the medium of the press. Mr J. B. Saxon, of Nelson, is at present engaged in surveying the Northwood Estate (late E. Fear on), which is to be subdivided into suitable allotments. Plans etc., will be finished in the course ot a few weeks, when tenders will be called for the sections. The local schools will be closed on Monday next, the 3rd instant, toe first day of the Jubilee Celebrations at Nelson. The attention of those who intend visiting Nelson during Jubilee week (and from what we learn there will be quite an exodus from this district) is
directed to "She arrangements made for the conveyance of passengers on the Nelson section of the New Zealand Railwavs.
The a nnual Hai-vest Thanksgiving service in connection'with the Motueka Wesleyan Church will be held on Sunday, the 16th-of February. In view of the' bountiful yields of fruit and other crops, the: adherents .will no doubt be present at. divine service on the date mentioned.
Mr Daniel Bate, of Riwaka, has gone to Christchurch to bid farewell to his son, Trooper P. Bate who leaves for South Africa next week. . .■'. Herbert Ernest Bugg, late of. Hautere Cross, Wellington, has become tired of his family name, and notifies that henceforth he will assume the surname of Leigh-ton. What's in a name ? Humbug.!.-■-.
Farmers are reminded of the meeting of the local .branch of the Farmer's Union, which will be'held in the Church of England school room to morrow night. . •
Mr E. F. Burrell, of Penton, Orinoco, has received very satisfactory and encouraging replies from the Waimea County Council and the Nelson City Council in response to a letter forwarded by him re railway from Motueka to Richmond. No doubt combined action on this , question will.be- taken before the next session of Parliament, most of the bodies favoring a conference. The yearly meeting of the Nelson District A.6.F. will be held on Thursday, the 13th February. P.C.R's. Bros W. J. Moffatt and P." Quayle are the delegates to represent Court Perseverance.
A recently registered baby of Synney was named Fern Tree---names of parents, T. Tree and Rose Tree. Other members of the family are Peach Tree, A. Z. L. Tree, Wattle Tree, and Eucalyptus Tree. Mr G. A. Skene, representative of Messre Ninuno and Blair, seed merchants, Dunedin, is at present on a business visit to this district. Mr C. H. Banfield, Riwaka, notifies that he wishes to purchase a foal, of the plough horse stamp. The- annual district meeting of the Nelson District 1.0.0. F., M.U will be will be held in the Motueka Lodge room on Thursday the 13th February. Twenty two delegates from all parts of Nelson and the Warmeas will attend. We may mention that this will be the first occasion on which the Nelson disriet will hold a meeting in Motueka. Mr C. J. Boyce, sou of Mr George Boyce, of the Swan Hotel, is an applicant for the position of headmaster of the Tadmor School. Mr Boyce is a native of this district and his friends are hoping to hear of his appointment. The War Office has decided to grant all colonials serving at the front who haue came from over-sea colonics war gratuities at the rate of .£5 each to the men and .£10; each to the officers. South Africans will not participate in this award.
It is undertood that the Chief Health Off cer has made a report on his inspection of the various sites for the suggested consumptive homes, the vote for which passed Parliament last sess im. Dr Mason is of opinion that the most suitable site in the South Island is at the Port of Lyttelton, .vhile for the' North Island he favours the establishment of a consumptive sanatorium in the Wairarapa district We have authority (says the Manawatu Daily Times) for stating that when the Government takes over the Mana watu rail way an expend iture amounting to probably between .£ls. 000 and .£20,000 will be necessary at the Palmerston North railway station, as very great alterations will then be required t > c >pe with the inc eased goods traffic.
