RIWAKA ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly' 'meetings of the above Beard was held at the Libiary room on Friday last. Present . Messrs Bate (chairman), James, Woolf, Fry, Drummond and Cook. Minutes of previous meeting read and confirmed.
Ti e chairman reported that he had received the following telegram from Mr O. W. Hurstbouse, Chief Engineer of Roads : „
The Government have been advised the law officers of the- Crown that as and from the 30th. of June last,>all agreements entered into previous to that date in respect to expenditure of votes for roads and construction of other public works therefor lapsed, You are therefore notified that all such agreements are at an end and void. If any moneys have been expended by you on the faith of such agreement, and the same have not yet been paid please send return at onee, ; shewing amount actually expended by you, and giving particulars of work, date of authority, etc., and as a matter of equity, the Government will bear its share, but as and from the date of this notice, seeing it would be unlawful so to do, no further moneys will be paid in respect to such work or under such voided and cancelled agreement. In cases where a written contract has been entered into by you lor the completion ■of any given road or work under the lapsed and cancelled agreement, you will require to send a copy of such contract, so that a new agreement, as provided for by section 12 of the Appropriation Act, 1901, maybe entered into as between you and the Minister in Charge of the Department. In respect to the construction of othet roads and works, and for which no contract has been actually let, a commencement de novo is requisite and new agreements, as between you and the Minister are required before any pajunent can be made. A schedule, shewing in detail the agreements between you and the Minister of the Department which have lapsed and that are cancelled, will be sent in due course.
The following tenders were reeeiv-
Swamp Roap contract : Hickmott and Barnett £7 6s, W. Duncan L 6, P. Fry L 5 (accepted). Formation at Tutbury's: Hlckim.tt and Barnett 15s per chain (accepted). Tutbury L 4 15s (informal), C. Castle and C:t L 3 9s (informal). Brooklyn cart road. P. Fry L 4 10s (accepted). Teams lor the year : Hickmott, one horse team 8s 6d per day ; two horse team lOs per day (accepted). O. Bra' - ley 8s 6d and l*os 6d ;A. McLea n 9s and lls : P. Fry 9s and 11s. The lowest tenders in each case were accepted on the motion of Mr Drummond seconded by Mr Fry. The following accounts were passed for payment : Miller and Sons 16s 4d, W. Duncan 295. D. Bndden L 6 4s 93. and P. Fry L 5 8s the last mentioned amount to be held until the work is passed. The chairman drew attention to the state of the bridge near the Riwaka school, which was in a had state and lequired new planking.
After some discussion, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Drummond, seconbed by Mr Fry, That the timber for a new top for the bridge be ordered and that the dayman be instructed to effect the necessary repairs as soon as convenient.
Mr Drummond moved and Mr Fry eeconded, That the dayman be instructed to clear out the water tables on the Riwaka Valley road, and that he he authorised to take a man .with him to assist in the work, the cost not to exceed L 3.

The c -e lit balance at the Bank was reported to he L 136 Os ®lld. Mr James move 1, seconded by Mr Fry, That the dayman be employed to
exit the willows on the road between Trewavas’ and Evans at Brooklyn. ■At the request of Mi - Fry, it was agreed to put the daymau on -to level and repair the bjiek load to Askews, the work having been promised some months ago. The meeting then closed.
