Some idea of the commercial depression which is sweeping over Europe, and some proof that England is not suffering in splendid isolation, may be gathered from the following significant, facts:—(l) The largest iron smelting works in Saxony has just shut down all its blast fm-naces; (2) at least 25,000 workmen in the Hungarian iron industries are at the present time out of employment ; (3) the Russian Government has intervened to prevent the bankruptcy of several important commercial concerns ; (4) the United States exports for September were, with one exception, the smallest in value of any month last year, and“ the smallest of any September since 1898.
