MOTUEKA MOUNTED RIFLES.
The sports organised by the above corps were held on Boxing Bay in a paddock kindly lent by Mr Robert Staples and were an unqualified success a large number of* spectators being present from all parts of the district, including quite a number of excursionists from Nelson who came over in the steamers Lily, Wairoa and Lady Barkly. The Nelson Garrison Band attended and played some choice selections during the day, which was an ideal one as far as the weather was concerned. The gate receipts amounted Ffco over <£so and it is estimated there Were fully 2000 persons on the ground. Whe events resulted as follows :

Privates’ Flat Race, 220 yds, handicap. —Cook, Motueka (6yds), 1 ; J. Richards (Battery) (scr), 2. Bucket and Potato Race (mounted). — Trooper Moorhouse (Wakatus), 1 ; Fowler (Motueka), 2. Non-com’s Flat- Race (220yds handicap), Sergt Mitchener (Nelson Rifles, 4yds), 1; Sergt Ha\vksworth(H. Battery, scr), 2. Jumping by half-sections, over 3 flights of hurdles Fauchelle and Page, (Takakal Mounted Rifles), 1 ; Haycock and Cl fford (Motueka Mounted Rifles), 2. H. Battery Event (three-legged race) — J. and F. Richards, 1 ; Brown and Wimsett, 2.
Victoria Cross Rescue Race. —Sergt Fowler (Motueka), 1; Sergt , Fauchelle (Takaka), 2. Tug of war by teams of six men.—Serst Kemp’s team "(Motueka Mounted), 1 ; H. Battery 2. Lemon Cutting by officers.—Captain Deck, 1. Ancient Tdurnament. —Engagement between John Bull and Kruger, the latter badly defeated. Corporal Senior (Motueka) was John Bull and Sergt Kemp (Motueka) was Kruger. Physical Drill.—Sergt Mitchener’s spuad (Nelson Rifles). Only one entry. Single Jump|over hurdles. —Sergt-Major Trolove (Mbtueka), 1 ; Trooper' McGowan (Wakatus), 2. 26 competed. Boot Race. —Trooper Duncan (Motueka), 1 ; Trooper McFarlane 2.
