The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. "Te Oranga Moti Iwi." TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1901. NELSON DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS.

. —o- — Ris Worship the Mayor, Mr Henry Baigent, has forwarded us a neatly printed card containing list of sports entertainments, etc., to be held in Nelson in February next. The decislon of the citizens to fittingly celebrate the diamond jubilee of the settlement of the province is a wise one. The band of early pioneers is fast diminish - ing ; few remain who landed in Nelson haven per ships Whitby, Willwatch, Arrow and Fifeshire in 1842, but they

have left worthy decsndants,- men whohave helped- to- develop its resources establish lucrative businesses, and by theijr eiaergy and' usefulness in municipal matters, have succeeded in making Nelson a charming city, the adkiiratu n of many tourists who visit Ne .V Zealand. It is both fitting and appropriate that Nelson-should have as its Chief Magistrate during the celebration an energetic and capable man such as Mi* Henry Baigent, who was born in the province,- and who has been so

closely associated with the progress of the district for many years. Mr Bai - -gent is a- public spirited citizen, courteous to all r and- with means and address to represent the city as it should

be on such an important occasion. The •programme* before us - is a comprehensive one furnishing proof that the strong and thoroughly representative

committee, which for months past has

been busily engaged in completing serr&pggpients for the entertainment of tbose vVho intend being present at the celebrations, has done its best to ensure a successful and enjoyable

carnival week. The proceedings commence on Sunday, February 2nd when appropriate services will be held in various churches. On Monday the 3rd, after a salute by the Battery, a grand procession will take place, rightly followed by an entertainment to the old settlers. During the iest of that day and also‘till the evening of the 7th sports, fireworks, bowling tournaments, militarv review, cricket match, regatta, fire brigade demonstrations, theatrical performances, etc., will take place. Members of the Government, including the Premier,. Legislators of both Houses of Parliament, prominent devines and leading citizens have announced their intention of being present, and as an additional attraction to visitors, H.M.S. Itingarooma is to visit the port during the festival. The Committee, which has an excellent and pains-taking Secretary in Mr A. R. Smart, a highly respected citizen of Nelson, has also arranged with the

shipping companies for cheap excur-

sions. The carnival held ten years ago was a splendid success ; the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations promise to eclipse it, and we trust the hopes of those who have so enthusiastically worked for months past will be justified to the fullest extent.
