HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
When Peeling Onions.— If a steel needle is held between the teet, when peeling onions for pickling it will prevent the eyes from watering. How to Bake Pies.—When baking pies, if the pastry should brown too quiekley, cover it with a piece of greased paper to prevent it burning.
Lemon Juice for the Hands. —The best thing to whiten red hands is lemon juice. Rub a little in every time after washing. Borne people soak their hands in a weak solution of chloride of lime and water to whiten them. Only a very little of the lime must be used, or it will burn tlie skin.
To Shine Boots.—To shine boots quickly, do not blacken, but rub with a piece of orange. Let the juice ary fn, and then polich with a soft brush. To Drive Away Moths.—To drive moths from upholstered work, sprinkle the upholstered parts with benzine. The benzine should be put in a small watering-pot, such as is used for houseplants. It does not spot the most delicate silk, and the unpleasant odour passes off after an hour or two’s exposure in the air.
Care of Saucepans.—lf a little powdered hearthstone is r übbed on saucepans anfi all cooking utensils -after being washed in a little warm water it will keep them bright, and they will look as good as new. Soot Kills Insects.—Dry soot destroys insects and worms. Soot and salt make a homely hut valuable toothpowder.
To Make Shoes 'Waterproof.—To render shoes waterproof warm a little beeswax and mutton suet until it is liquid, and rub it slightly over the edges of the sole where the stitches are. To Make Meat tender.—A little vinegar rubbed on beefsteak half an houi before cooking will make it beautifully tender. -fj J%gj)
