FATAL ACCIDENT.

A great deal of sympathy was felt for Mr and Mrs Charles T. Brougham, V|f the Xiower Moutere, when foeknown that his four year old da-iighter had died on Saturday evening, through injur-'es received by.- fire during the afternoon. It appears that Mr Brougham was working in his. hopgarden when the child, accompanied by her brother, approached him and after a short stay the twain started to return to the About seven or eight chains from where the father was at work a stump had been burning and it is surmised the girl's clothing came in contact with the flames. Hearing cries, Mr Brougham hastened to her assistance, and with difficulty succeeded in quenching the flames. not, unfortunately, before the child was shockingly burnt about the face, hands, and body. Mr Brougham without delay brought the sufferer into Motueka and called into requisition the services of Dr 'Gibbs, who did everything possible to alleviate her suffering . The poor child,, cheerful and conscious to the last, lingered for about five hours after the catastrophe, Avhen death supervened. Aninquest was deemed unnecessary, the doctor certifying that death was caused by the shock succeeding severe burns. The funeral mti* "' place yesterday afternoon, the ..;_ ./ being interred in the Lower Moutere Oemetery. Mr G. Deck conducted the funeral ' rites. Bot,a of Mr hands were severely burned in his efforts to save the child. They have been dressed by Dr Gibbs and it will be some time before Mr- Brougham is able to resume fanning onerations.
