Dr Gibbs, of Nelson, is acting aslocum tenens for Dr Deck during the latter's absence on military duty. Mr Winstone, inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, visited Motueka on Monday in his official capacity. The scholarship and pupil teachers examinations take place this week. The local candidates will sit for examination in one of the school rooms, Mr Malcolm, the late headmaster acting as Supervisor.
A sawmill is to be started in the central Moutere by Mr Thomas Hewetson, who has leased a section of land above the State School. A considerable quantity of timber, principally rimu and white pine, is in sight,, and Mr Hewetson, who intends procuring the most modern machinery and appliances, expects to start work about May next. committee was held on Saturday evening, all the members being present. Sundry accounts were passed for payment : It was resolved that the Chairman should arrange for some two or three of the desks to be repaired. At the meeting or* Saturday night it was mentioned that there were 122 members in the local branch of the Farmer's Union.
The Motueka Mounted Rifles under Captain Deck, assembled at the Post Office corner on Monday afternoon and proceeded to- the annual camp, which is to be held in a paddock near the Whakarevva Orphanage. Lieutenant Davis, of the permanent staff, has arrived, and will act as drill instructor.
Mr D. Bate, of Riwaka, is at present on the Wast Coast, where the Nelson Lmd Board is holding meetings t > dispose of business affecting that locality.

A friendly game of cricket was played on Saturday last; between the Whak uewa Orphanages boys, and a team from the Motueka borough school. The latter b >ys, accompanied by the headmaster, Mr H. Langford, drove up to the Orphanage and received a most cordial reception from Mr H. Haycock and his boys. The game was stubbornly contested and in the very best of spirits ; but the visitors proved themselves too strong, winning by 9 wickets. Saturday last was St Andrew's Day. Or Sunday fche Queen Consoit celebrated her first birthday since the accession of King Edward vii to the throne of England. The Wairoa County Council is sending to England for motor wagons for road-making purposes.
