CIGARETTE POISON.
Stesae years ago, x says,.,an eminent physieian,."ivhe?£i«a medical student, I saw as cruel experiment performed on a cat which had been, making the night air hideous-, ancr wthich was considered by erne - of. the . students to have outlived* its 7 usefulness. Jt was decided thftt life be sacrificed on the alter of science,-and-the quantity of tobacco whieh is necessary to make a cigarette was allowed 'tarsoak for a few minutes in several spoonfuls of water, and then a portion of'"" "this was injected under the cat's skin. In. less than 15 minutes this cat endowed as it was with its proverbial 9 lives, succumbed. In our
large cities,-.boys who are scarcely old ■> enough to'put on their own clothes
can be seen seated on the kerbstones
repeating .this experiment upon thems selves by vigorously puffing away at cigarettes which contain-this pernicious weed. By smoking cigarettes these children are virtually sending in advance applications for entrance into institutions for the feeble minded, or for a berth in the reform school. Educators have particularly noted that few cigarette smoking boys ever reach the high school. Their brain energy has been so thoroughly wasted by this pernicious habit that they do not have sufficient mental capacity to pass the entrance examination in advanced work.
