A rather serious fire broke out at the factory of Messrs Robertson Bros' builders, Nelson, on Monday morning which resulted in the total destruction of. the building and the bulk of the plant. The loss is at between L3OOO and L4OOO over the insurance. Mr C. G. Peart's engineer's shop next door was saved through the efforts of the Fire Brigade. The White Star liner Athenic, -of 12,500 tons, now being built for the New Zealand trade, has a large refrigerating installation on Hall's patent dry air carbonic system, with a carrying capacity of 100,000 carcases of mutton. Special arrangements are also made for carrying dairy produce and fruit, preserving provisions, making ice, etc. As a set off* to the prevailing idea that the death rate on the West Coast is high, the West Coast Times mentions the fact that in one of the wards in the Hokitika Hospital there are 14 patients, whose united ages make the total of 1150 years--an average of slightly over 82 years each. The New York newspapers devote whole columns to the marriage of Mr John Rockefeller, junr., which took place on October 9th. Young .Mr Rocketeller may some day be the richest man in the world. He is the eldest son of Mr Rockefeller, the famous American financier, multi-million-aire prospective billionaire. The bride was Miss Abby Aldrich, daughter of a wealthy senator. The 800 wedding presents, mostly of plate and jewellery, represented a fabulous amount. Over 700 guests attended the reception after the wedding, arriving from all quarters in special trains and steamers. Young
Mr Rockefeller is a hard-working "business man and a devout Christian. He teaches in a New York Sunday School, and is an ardent temperance advocate. No wines were served at the wedding.
