The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. "Te Oranga Moti Iwi." TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1901.
The S.S Wairoa leaves Motueka for Nelson on Thui-sday morning at half past six. * She proceeds from Nelson to Takaka arid Collingwood the same evening at five o'clock. At the meeting of the Motmeka Mounted Rifles held on Saturday evening it was decided to hold the contemplated sports on Boxing Day instead of during the time they will go into camp, early next month. It is possible, how* ever, that the men will organise some competitions between members. .Mr Robert Staples of Motueka reports an increase of 65 per cent of
3ambs this season. Like all others in the district his flock suffered from the keen blasts ami changeable weather which prevailed 4 . An application, endorsed by the majority of teachers in this district, has been forwarded to the Education Board at Nelson by Mr Moffatt, Chairman of the Motueka School Committee, asking that Motueka be created a centre for the scholarship examinations for the district. We understand the pupils were examined here some years ago, but for some reason or other the practice was discontinued. It is to be hoped the Board will see its way to accede to the repuest, as the expense of sending children away from their ties to sit for examination is often x to those parents who are anxious vail themselves of every educational advantage. In the absence of Rev. Thomas Johnston, the services, both morning and evening, were conducted by jfche Rev. A. W- Stace. The services were well attended.
Last Friday evening a number of persons assemdlad at the school room, Ngatimoti, to talk over matters relating to fruit culture. The proceedings were of a conversational character, Mr J. C. Blackmore, %vho was present, answered many questions and imparting useful information. At the close of the meeting Mr J. A Guy moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Blackmore. Another meeting is to be held shortly, the date of which will be publicly notified.
Mr Ernest Mackay, travelling representative of the Government Life Insurance Department is at present on a business visit to Motueka and surrounding districts. Mr Mackay is a first class canvasser, popular with all sections of the community, and it is not surprising to learn that he has been most successful in the taking or " lives " for the Department.
A costume cricket match and all day picnic will be held in Mr Thomas Ma<:ma!hon's paddock, at Riwaka, on the 9th instant, the King's Birthday. The cricket match, veterans versus school hoys will, we feel sure, prove most attractive and entertaining, and we expect to see a large gathering, especially as the object, tj purchase a piano for the school, is wellworthy ? of .support. Hot water and milk will be provided. Shearing operations aie now in full swung throughout the district.
It is somewhat of a record to be able t-.» extract 100 teeth, more or less firmly set in the jaws in one day, but we un--dorstand a leading dentist who was in Motueka a few days ago succeeded in doing so. Evidently the natural teeth of the rising generation have to give place to those from the laboratory «..f the to >th puller. Locally-grown green peas are now on sale at Hastings. As showing the iuterest taken in cricket at Ngatimot', Mi- Green, the delegate from that district remarked on Friday evening that the Motueka Cricket Clob was fortunate enough to have a President ; their club had failed t v srat one.
Jtfßie ' Wellingt m Pest pred e-ts that Hon. H. J. Seddon will be appointed Governor of the Orange It ver Colony. Tnis season's lamb is being sold on the. West Coast, according- to the Westport N jws «
A gathering of friends and adherents of the Wesleyan Church will be held at Mrs Cresswell's, Lower Moutere, on the King's Birthday. A number of friends are also expected from Thorpe, Dovednle and. Ngatimoti..
Mr Gilbert.. Postmaster, notifies that the private box lobby, of the Post Office will be t>pen oih wueji days from Z. 45 a.m
to 9 p.m. ;on Sundays from 9*45 to 10.45 a.m. ; on holidays as may be arranged. We have received from Mr Joseph Taylor a pamphlet entitled " Nelson Harbor and City Improvements.—A Ship Canal Scheme which would defray its own cost; Electric Lighting and Power for the City." The brochure has been most favorably received in Nelson City, where many intelligent citizens have expressed an opinion that the schemes set forth are not only practical but a very long way ahead of those propounded by Messrs Reynolds, O'Oonnor, Akeisten, Snodgrass and others. It would be unfair to the writer to make extracts from such a pamphlet as the one now before us ; it must be read in its entirety, and we can assure those interested it is worth perusing.
Sir James Hector, who recently underwent an operation, is progressing favourably, and expects to be able to resume business very soon. Tom Seddon, who won the Senior Cup and Lord Ranfurly's Cup at the College sports yesterday, is evidently a "chip of the old block." His father, the Premier, won a cup in 1365 at the Eight Hour Sports in Melbourne, and in his early days was well known as an athelete. Consequently, he is very proud of the success of his son, w r ho, in addition to his wins yesterday, holds the college record for 100* yards for boys uuder fourteen.
