■A-return furn ished to the House shows that tlie number of permits for lotteries gianted by the Colonial Secretary to persons connected with religious denominations for the yearending March 31st, 1901, was fiftyfive. Of these thirty-three were granted to the Roman Catholic, twenty one to the Church of England’ and one to the German Chur ch. The number of licenses granted to racing clubs to use the totalisator was 153, covering 278 days’ racing, and for this the Government received in revenue LI 7, 541.
