THE STONE BREAKER QUESTION.

We clip the following letter from Wairarapa Daily Times of the 25th October, which will be of interest to our readers, as it refutes the statements made by Cr Chamberlain at a late meeting of the Masterton Council :—- Sir : I was much interested in your report of a special meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, that appeared in your issue of the Bth inst., and more especially with Cr Chamberlain's .-speech, in opposing the motion for the purchase of road machinery. Without presuming to criticise, I may, however, be permitted to comment upon that portion wherein he quotes from some person of '•undoubted authority and •experience," hailing from Motueka. According to him, the cast of crushing here, was 4s per cubic yard. Now", Sir. it so happens a report on this very subject was presented to this Oniric!i at its last meeting, and reading from that report I find the cost of crushing with the new set of colonial-•v<;-ar and tear in addition to charges, was 2s 0.43 d per cubic yard. I may add that the colonial jaws were usually bad, and we are now getting two sets fron. ling-land. They broke 464 yards of metal and cost when placed in position L 9 15s Bd. Notwithstanding their wretched quality the metal cost as above stated—i e., 2s 0.43 d to break i.:. and not 4s as alleged by Cr Chamberla in. The cost of those 464 yards when spread on the streets at various points extending to a distance of two.s miles was 5s 4.94 cl pes: yard, everything included. It must be borne in mind that our machine is stationarj', a saving might be effected with a portable. I iiui etc., R. W. H. Rankin. Member Motueka Borough Coun eil.
