The usual monthly meeting of the Motueka Borough Council will be held this evening. Two applications for old age pensions were dealt with yesterday afternoon by the Stipendary Magistrate; Mr Wilson Heaps. In one case a pension of LI 6 was granted, and in the other L 6 per annum. The Charles Edward is advertised to leave Nelson for Wanganui and Wellington to-morrow Wednesday. The S.S Lily is laid up in Nelson for the purpose of having a new boiler placed in her. She is expected to pick up her running next week. A section of the Motueka. Mounted Rifles will proceed to the Butts to-mor-" row -morning to take part in class fireing- ■ .- ■ t, t A meting of the Cricket Association will be held at the end of this week to arrange fixtures for the season.

At the last meeting of the Nelson Land Board it was resolved to recom - mend that the following lands be thrown open for- selection as secondclass lands :—Section, 2, block xii, Motueka, 112 acres, 6s per acre ; section 105, Moutere Hills, 241 acres, 6s gAr acre. The following proposed

Hall lately of the local Post Office is to appear at the Magistrates Court, Nelson, on Thursday, to answer the charges of theft of Government moneys, recently laid by the police. Hall arrived in Nelson on Sunday last.
As it is the intention of a large number of settlers throughout the district to plough up their hop gardens and also to extend their- present orchard areas, it will be wise for them to procure the best possible trees, true to name and, particularly refeiring to the apple, grafted on iron blighted stocks. Messrs Rankin and Sons notify elsewhere that the}' have been appointed agents for one of the largest nurseries in Victoria, who grow none but the best varieties of trees. Cataloges and price lists will be available shortly, and we would recommend intending buyers to interview Messrs Rankin and Sons on the subject before placing their orders elsewhere.
At a representative meeting of the Nelson Provincial Fruitgrower's Union held at Nelson on Saturday last branches of the Uuion, one to embrace Motueka. Riwaka and Moutere ; another to include Ngatimoti, Orinoco, Pokororo and Pangatotara are to 1)3 established, each branch to have a, secretary and treasurer and a committee of five members. Messrs T. Pattie and C. H. Banfield (Riwaka) F. Huffam (Motueka) "Wills (Ngatimoti) and James Drummond (Moutere) were added to the temporary Executive Committee which will carry on the work till 30th of next June.
MeR. T. Melhuish, of Cavendish House, Nelson, has a re-place advertisement in this issue, to which we direct the attention of our readers. In reference t> his letter order department, Mr Melhuish says orders sent by post will be carefully and promptly attended to, and that patterns w.ll be sent on application.
In looking over the " Ordinances of New Mun.-M.er A.D. 1849 and of the Province of Nel-on, passed in the first eleven sessions of the Provincial Council, 1853 to 1863." edited and published a year later by Mr John Sharp, Chief Clerk of the Resident Magistrate, we notice "■ An Act to authorise the IBuperiiitendcut to guarantee certain
t:erest upon the capital to be expend in constructing a Duck cr Patent Slip at the Port of Nelson." This was assented to on the 25th July 1861, over fory years ago. Evidently the project fell flat, as similar proposals for benefiting Nelson have done since.

Seme fat lambs sent Home from Waikato, weighing about 401bs each, realised 6d per lb. The quality was said to be quite equal to English, which at the time was realising Is per lb. Captain Seddon is a- passenger by tde Tongariro en route for New Zealand. The return cricket match between the Riwaka and Motueka school clubs was played at MotueLa on Saturday last, when the home team was again victorious, this time by 49 runs. The members of both teams exhibited a fine, friendly and gentlemanly spirit throughout the game The visitors were both younger" and smaller than their opponents, still they played a plucky game.
