A lady correspondent of "M.A.P." gives the following pen and ink sketch of Lord Ranfurley's " charming wife, whose popularity in New Zealand quite equals her husband's." Lady Ranfurley is a handsome brunette, with large dark eyes and masses of dusky hair, which she wore cut across the front in the original staaight fringe, long after everyone else had discarded it. Her features are well marked, and she has a singularly sweet expression, which harmonises with her genial, pleasant manners. There is not a particle of " side " about her, nor does she allow any undue formality to mar the success of her entertainments in New Yealand, though no one better understands how to maintain the dignity of her high position. "Well read and with a cultured mind, she has never been very keen about sport, but in her younger days delighted in dancing, and often took part in the gay national dance which, from time immemorial, has opened St. Patricks at Dublin Castle.

It is stated (says the Oamaru Mail) that the whole of tloe estates of the late Hon M. Holmes will shortly, consequent upon his death, be put into the market for sale, together with the whole of the stock. It is probable that the Awamoa Estate will be offered in small farms, plans for that purpose having, we are told, been prepared some time ago. The most economical department in the State."—Mr Hutcheson on the Customs Department.
