TROUT FISHING.
There was a short discussion in the House last night in regard to the customs and habits of fish, the result of a KMr AVilford that a lai-gei put on the Estimates for Zealand rivers with wnttioned the rainbow headed trout of America ova- rivers. There was a protest against this on the part of Messis McLachLm and Meredith, Canterbury members, Mr McLachlan suggesting that the rivers of Canterbury were already fully stocked with jtrout and that it was time the Govfernment cleared the 'weeds out of Lake ■Ellesmere. Mi-"Hogg objected to any (further expenditure for rainbow- trout. ' trout, he said, devoured other fish, and were even "born Anarchists," for when they could get nothing else to eat, they devoured one another. To this Mr "WTLford replied tl at the condition of the Mangatainoka a.ad Ma-. kauri rivers proved the contrary. Ee agreed that rainbow trout devoured the spawn of the* brown trout, and thiswas th& reason why the lat,t- named' species.*-was decreasing, while the rainbow trout was inereusing. The vote for fish hatcheries and acclimatisation, -was, passed; u.n-alt£re;h.
