PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL.
Ever since the Institute committee postponed their annual function ' the plain and fancy dress ball, which was to mark the termination of the dancing class held here during the winter months, has been looked "forward to with keen ' interest ' by the members and their friends. It is no wonder, therefore, ihat a brilliant and animated spectacle was witnessed on Wednesday evening. The dresses both plain and fancy, showed that considerable skill, ingenuity forethought, and much patience had been bestowed upon them by the fair sex, and it is safe to say that the gathering eclipsed all others that have been held in Motueka for many years past; in fact we' feel suie (and our opinion is supported by many who have been present at like ones) it would do credit to the large centres of the Colony. The floor was as burnished glass, making dancing both easy and gladsome. About 40 couples were present, and precisely at eight o'clock the proceedings were opened with-the Spiral March, led by the Heavenly Twins, quaint little creatures, whose vagaries were mirthful, the characters being acted to perfection. The roles \ assumed by those present were original, | striking and effective, and when revolving round the hall presented an animated scene'. It would be a pity to select the most striking ones, when so many deserved notice ; suffice it to say that the assemblage was unanimously agreed as to the excellent get up of certain members of the class. The music was supplied by Miss Greenfield ; extras being played Mrs W. R. Anderson, .Misses Brougham and G. Gilbert. MeesrsJames Greensill and .Whitehorn officiated as Masters of Ceremonies and carried out their duties in a*n efficient manner. Midway between the dances the company sat clown to an attractive supper, to which ample justice was done.'• Dancing was kept j up with much spirit till the early hours j of the morning, when the Company dispersed to their homes after singing Auld Lang Syne. Taken all together the evening was most enjoyable, everything passed off smoothly, and the promoters are to be congratulated upon the successful issue of the affair.
