As a number of residents have express-
ed a desire to be onlookers, it has been decided to place the gallery at the disposal of the pubilc from 8 to 11 p.m., at a nominal cost of admission. Particulars are published elsewhere. Immediately after the conclusion of the statement made by His Worship the Mayor, at the Council's meeting' last Tuesday evening, Or Tarrant made a personal explanation as to the reason why his name, with those of other Councillors, did not appear at the foot
i of the letter of condolence sent to Mr Hursthouse by the Corporation. Owing to the wet weather he was unable to affix his name when the others did and when he called later on to sisjn, the letter had been despatched. He had known the late Mrs Hursthouse
for very many years, and was extremely sorry, through unforseen circumstances, his signature was not on the document. He trusted the Mayor would allow him sign the same. Mr Hursthouse accepted the explanation, and promised to comply with Cr Tarrant's wishes.
We would-draw the attention of the
Borough Council to the wretched state of the footpath in High Street, near Mr Bang's residence. To the pedestrian whose business or pleasure carries him in that direction we would say, shun the part as you would a book fiend or a pestilence. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Motiieka Masonic Lodge, which was to have been held last "Wednesday was adjourned for a week on account of the inclement weather.
Captain Hultquist, the officer in charge of the local branch of the Salvation Army, is organising a manster tea meeting to be held on the Bth of October.
