Referring to the Lilly white case the “Leeds Mercury ” publishes the f Lowing comment :—“ The Ngw Zealand police made a mistake in arresting the man Charles Lilly white without first thoroughly investigating the extraordinary story of the woman who pretended to recognise him. It was at. the best a very doubtful tale, and one which ought not to have taken in the officers of the law so easily, Had they made quite sure of their man before sailing for England, Colchester would have been saved hundreds of pounds, and the unfortunate victim of their egregious blunder the pain and anxiety such an extremely LU S experience must ha ve occasioned him, It is to be hoped that Lillywhite will be adequately compensated for all l e has gone through since he was taken into custody at the beginning of last November.”
